The Holy Empire of The Styx River is a massive, efficient nation, ruled by The Soul Reaper with an iron fist, and renowned for its rum-swilling pirates, compulsory military service, and irreverence towards religion. The hard-nosed, cynical, humorless population of 1.064 billion Styxia are kept under strict control by the oppressive government, which measures its success by the nation's GDP and refers to individual citizens as "human resources."

The medium-sized, corrupt, moralistic, well-organized government juggles the competing demands of Law & Order, Defense, and Administration. It meets to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Acheron. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 44.7%.

The all-consuming Styxian economy, worth 139 trillion Souls a year, is driven entirely by a combination of government and state-owned industry, with private enterprise illegal. However, for those in the know, there is a large, well-organized, broadly diversified black market in Arms Manufacturing, Information Technology, Uranium Mining, and Woodchip Exports. The private sector mostly consists of enterprising ten-year-olds selling lemonade on the sidewalk, but the government is looking at stamping this out. Average income is an impressive 131,119 Souls, but there is a large disparity between incomes, with the richest 10% of citizens earning 540,222 per year while the poor average 20,956, a ratio of 25.8 to 1.

The steaks are too high for ambassadors to butcher foreign relationships, the 3rd Airborne Beekeepers are the most feared regiment in the Styxian military, ghost regiments exist only on paper, and pedants defending The Soul Reaper observe that psychopaths and sociopaths aren't exactly the same thing. Crime, especially youth-related, is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. The Styx River's national animal is the Fenrir, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its national religion is Anton.

The Styx River is ranked 77,559th in the world and 145th in The League for Highest Foreign Aid Spending, scoring 379.84 on the Clooney Contribution Index.
